Billed as "the handcuff king," Hardeen, born Theodore Weiss and the younger brother of Harry Houdini, headlines this 1908 color lithograph advertising a Klaw & Erlanger's Advanced Vaudeville matinee for New Year's week. The poster also names co-stars Trixie Friganza and Maidie Scott, and its wording calls the bill the last of the big vaudeville programs. Posters like this were printed in large runs to cover city streets and theater fronts, when touring headliners and multi-act bills drew crowds before motion pictures took over popular entertainment. Hardeen's escape routines in handcuffs and chains relied on the same appeal that made his brother famous.
