Catcher Charles Schmidt appears here as a member of the Detroit Tigers, in two prints mounted together on one board. The pictures date to 1909, the season Detroit reached the World Series behind Ty Cobb and other stars of the American League. Photographs like these often came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early 1900s. Its negatives, now in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, show how ballplayers were presented to the public during the dead-ball era.
