Detroit's ballplayers are shown departing for their training headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, a reminder that major league teams of the early 1900s spent their spring preparing in warmer southern cities before the regular season opened. Spring training was then still informal, and a trip of this kind meant long train rides with the whole squad, equipment, and staff. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, so it was made to be published and to capture a moment of public interest. Its group composition and travel setting make it a useful record of how the sport and its teams worked before the modern era.
