Sam Crawford, nicknamed "Wahoo Sam," was one of the best-known outfielders of the Detroit Tigers in the early 1900s, and this portrait is dated October 8, 1909, the opening day of that year's World Series between Detroit and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Photographed by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events, the image reflects the period's taste for posed sports portraits. Crawford was known for his power and for leading the league in triples, and his Series appearances made him a familiar face to fans. The Bain collection at the Library of Congress preserves many such images of early professional ballplayers.
