Redlands, in San Bernardino County, was a citrus town in 1908, and its economy rested on oranges grown in the surrounding groves and packed for shipment by rail. The Santa Fe and Southern Pacific lines served the valley, carrying fruit to eastern markets, and the town's wealth showed in its substantial houses and downtown blocks. The Smiley Heights area and the Redlands Bowl were still ahead, but the city was already known for its Mission Revival and Queen Anne residences set among palms and orange trees. Residents took pride in the reputation of their Smiley Library and the nearby University of Redlands, founded in 1907 as a Baptist-affiliated institution, which gave the community a cultural life beyond agriculture.
