Riverside, California, in 1908 was a citrus town at the height of its navel orange boom. Irrigation from the Santa Ana River and the nearby Gage Canal had turned the dry Riverside valley into groves, and the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe lines carried boxed fruit east by rail. The town had incorporated as a city in 1883 and was among the wealthiest per capita in the state, with packing houses, nurseries and a growing population drawn by the orange trade. Residents of the day knew it as the place where the first navel orange trees in the region had been planted from Brazilian stock, a point of civic pride that shaped local life.
