Winfield Scott Hancock is the figure at the center of this pencil and watercolor drawing, made on yellow paper and dated to the first three days of July 1863, when he commanded the Union II Corps at Gettysburg. Hancock was among the most visible Union generals on the field, and he was seriously wounded in the thigh on the third day, during the repulse of Pickett's Charge. The sketch is a portrait and battle scene in one, and its inscribed title ties the portrait to the place and the moment. Its drawn-in sketches of trees on the reverse add a record of the rougher, quieter work of the artist.
