A color lithograph titled "The Mother's Grave," published in New York by J. Baillie around 1848, presents a sentimental scene of a family gathered at a tomb. Pictures of this kind belong to the mid-nineteenth-century vogue for mourning imagery, when domestic loss and the cemetery were favorite subjects for popular printmakers and their middle-class buyers. Prints like this one were often hung in parlors and sold as keepsakes, and the hand-colored or tinted tones of such lithographs were meant to make the grief feel tender and personal. Its pairing of family and tomb also reflects the rise of the rural cemetery as a place for public remembrance in the decades before the Civil War.
