Printed for May 30th specifically, this Memorial Day poster carries the holiday's date as its main message. It comes from the New York office of the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which produced silkscreen posters for public health, travel and community events in the 1930s. A date stamp on the back, April 16, 1937, suggests it was printed in the spring before the holiday. Memorial Day, which grew out of the Civil War era as Decoration Day, was a time for decorating graves and honoring veterans, and the poster's subjects of veterans, children and adults point to that shared remembrance.
