A woman in black kneels at a soldier's tomb in this hand-colored lithograph, the kind of scene that Currier & Ives sold to families during the Civil War. The print was published in New York around 1863, when the war had already claimed a great many lives and cemeteries and monuments were becoming places of public grief. Its catalog entry, number 5999 in the firm's raisonné, places it among the many sentimental images the company produced for parlor walls. Worth noticing is how the picture turns a soldier's death into a private, domestic act of mourning, a theme that later shaped the observance of Memorial Day.
