Catalogued as competition entry no. 1026, this color drawing is one of the more than 1,400 proposals submitted in 1980 and 1981 for a memorial to Americans who served in the Vietnam War. The jury chose the design of Maya Lin, then an architecture student at Yale: a V-shaped black granite wall inscribed with the names of the dead and missing, arranged in the order they were lost. Dedicated in 1982 on the National Mall, the memorial is now popularly known simply as "the wall.
