This print stands apart from many mourning pictures because it is dedicated to a specific man, Capt. John Williams, rather than to an unnamed loss. A woman in mourning dress sits beside a tomb bearing his inscription, a pose common in memorial prints of the period. Made by lithographer D.W. Kellogg between about 1840 and 1842 and colored by hand, such sheets were bought as keepsakes to hang in family parlors and mark a death. Its placement on a Memorial Day board reflects a later association, while the print itself belongs to the older American custom of private mourning.
