A phonograph shop at 1312 S Street in Washington is the subject of this glass negative, a small-format record of a commercial storefront from about 1921 to 1922. The National Photo Company, which documented the city's streets and businesses for much of the early twentieth century, made the image, and the collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. In those years the phonograph was a fast-growing consumer product, so shops like this one sold records and machines to households across the city. The negative shows streaks and other blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coatings, which affects some of the finer detail.
