Dallas, Texas, is shown here as a bird's-eye view from above and at an angle, a format that let viewers see the whole town and its streets at once. The 1892 lithograph was drawn by Paul Giraud, a panoramic map artist, and printed by the Dallas Lithographing Company. Dallas had grown quickly after railroads reached it in the 1870s, and by the early 1890s it was a busy center of cotton, trade, and rail traffic. Such maps were usually sold to local businesses and residents, so they show the buildings, streets, and rail lines that mattered most to the town's civic and commercial life.
