Wellge's bird's-eye view puts Norfolk's waterfront front and center, with the Elizabeth River and its wharves lined with shipping. Henry Wellge drew the city from an elevated angle, a method that let him show streets, rooftops, and the harbor together in one wide image. Published in Milwaukee by the American Publishing Company in 1892, the map reflects a period when Norfolk was a busy Atlantic port, handling coastal trade and goods moving between Virginia's interior and the wider world.
