Drawn from an elevated angle, this 1892 panorama shows Atlanta as a city rebuilt after Union forces burned much of it during the Civil War in 1864. Augustus Koch, a German-born artist who specialized in bird's-eye city views, drew the scene, and the Hughes Lithographing Company printed it. Maps like this one were popular in the late 1800s as civic boosterism, since they showed a growing city's streets, rail lines and major buildings in a single detailed image. Looking closely, viewers can trace how the young railroad hub had expanded across the surrounding land.
