Few American cities of the 1890s were captured from above as thoroughly as Waco in this 1892 bird's-eye panorama, drawn in perspective so the streets, rail lines and river bends read at a glance. The city sat on the Brazos River, and by the early 1890s it had grown into a regional center for cotton, rail traffic and education, with Baylor University having relocated there in 1886. Panoramic maps like this one, published by D.W. Ensign & Co. with A.L. Westyard credited as the artist, were sold to civic boosters and residents who wanted a picture of their town as a thriving place.
