Alexandria, a Potomac River port just south of Washington, is the subject of this bird's-eye view, which shows the town from an angle above rather than as a flat street plan. Union troops occupied Alexandria in May 1861, and for the rest of the war it served as a supply depot and hospital center for the armies defending the capital. Charles Magnus, a New York publisher known for lithographed panoramic views of American cities and regions, issued the map, and it preserves a useful record of the waterfront and street layout during the war years.
