Few state maps of Texas from the 1850s show the interior as clearly as Pressler's 1857 survey, which is why it still turns up in discussions of the state's early geography. Texas was growing fast then, and maps like this were used by settlers, land agents and officials trying to keep pace with new roads, counties and towns. Pressler's work is especially valued for its attention to the German communities that had been founded in the Hill Country during the previous two decades. This reduced version keeps the full outline of the state, so the relationship between its rivers, frontier and settled areas is easy to follow.
