Pressler's 1857 bird's-eye view turns the old Texas colonies into a single panoramic landscape, with the settled river valleys drawn as if seen from a height. The colonies it shows date from the 1820s and 1830s, when Mexican authorities granted land to empresarios such as Stephen F. Austin, who recruited settlers from the United States. Those grants laid the groundwork for the Anglo-American population that later pushed for Texas independence in 1836. Pressler's view was made two decades after those early settlements, so it reflects how the region looked in the mid-1800s as much as how it began.
