Clouds pile above the water and the surrounding mountains in this view of Lake George, in New York's Adirondack region, where the sky dominates the frame. The image is on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, one of the large-format negatives made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenery for publication and travel promotion around 1900 to 1910. By then Lake George was a well-known resort, reached by rail and steamboat and popular with vacationers from Northeastern cities. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
