The Yellowstone River, shown here in a 1908 view, is the waterway that carved the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and runs through the park's northern range before leaving Wyoming for Montana. Photographs from this period were often made to document the park's scenery for visitors who arrived by rail and stagecoach, when the region was still reached mainly by long overland trips. Early views like this one help show how the river and its banks looked before later roads, bridges, and development changed the approaches.
