The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, carved by the river through layers of volcanic rock in northwestern Wyoming, is the subject here, shown as a 1908 photograph. By that date the canyon had already drawn visitors to Yellowstone National Park, which had been established in 1872 as the first national park in the United States. Views like this one helped build the park's reputation, and the Upper and Lower Falls, with the yellow and rust-colored walls that give the canyon its name, were among the features tourists most wanted to see. Worth noticing is the scale of the gorge compared with the people and vantage points that surround it.
