Bennettsville, the seat of Marlboro County in northeastern South Carolina, is the setting for this print, which is titled for an "auto fountain" operated by C.L. McCormac. Early motorists often needed water for their radiators and themselves, and some roadside service stations offered water alongside gasoline. The Library of Congress dates the photograph only to between 1920 and 1940, a stretch when car ownership was spreading rapidly across the South and such stops were becoming a familiar part of town life. The print comes from the Wittemann Collection in the library's Prints and Photographs Division.
