Thomas Nast's wood engraving, published in *Harper's Weekly* on February 28, 1880, casts America as the bearer of good news to a distressed Ireland. The poor harvests of 1879 had left many Irish families short of food, and relief committees in the United States raised money and sent supplies across the Atlantic that winter. Nast, the magazine's best-known cartoonist, used the weekly's wide readership to turn that charity into a moral statement about national generosity. The image is a useful record of how American newspapers and illustrators framed transatlantic aid during the 1880 crisis.
