Sixteen fluted Corinthian columns stand in a quiet square in Milan, and this print records them as part of a Roman temple traditionally linked to Hercules, a survival from the city's ancient past known as Mediolanum. The columns, which front the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, were already drawing the attention of travelers and antiquarians by the late 1800s, when this photograph was likely made. Its album setting, alongside views of Genoa, Pisa, Verona, and Vienna, shows how visitors of that era assembled Italian antiquities into a single tour of the country's past.
