Curtis caught this moment of grain-cleaning among the Tewa of San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico, where a woman tosses wheat into the air so that the wind carries away chaff and lighter debris while the heavier kernels fall back into her basket or tray. Winnowing was ordinary daily work in Pueblo households, and Curtis, who photographed Native communities across the West for his multivolume study The North American Indian, often framed such tasks to show domestic life. The picture was published in volume 17 of that work, issued between 1907 and 1930, and it remains a useful record of household labor and material culture in the early twentieth century.
