Cincinnati's reservoir was part of a municipal water system that grew with the city's population along the Ohio River, when reliable supplies of clean water were a pressing public concern. This 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1915, when the Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document cities, landscapes, and public works for promotional use. Its catalog number and the inscription on the negative help identify it within that large commercial collection. Look closely at the water surface, the embankments, and the surrounding grounds, which show how engineers shaped a working utility to fit into the landscape.
