The title, Latin for "day of wrath," borrows the opening of a medieval hymn on the Last Judgment, and it signals how the crash of October 29, 1929, was felt. On that Tuesday the New York Stock Exchange collapsed under a flood of selling, wiping out fortunes and shaking confidence across the country. This 1929 lithograph captures the panic around Wall Street, a scene that soon came to stand for the Great Depression that followed. The print was later reproduced in a 1997 visual history of the United States, which helps place it within the larger story of the era.
