The World's Exchanges" is a color lithograph that sets trading floors in Europe beside those in the United States, as its subject headings indicate. Published in New York around 1886 by the lithography firm Root & Tinker, it appeared during a period of rapid growth in stock trading, when railroad and industrial shares drew large crowds of speculators to Wall Street and to exchanges in London and Paris. Its title suggests a broad comparison of how finance was conducted across nations. Because the record does not describe the individual scenes, the image is best read as a snapshot of how the 1880s saw the global business of buying and selling shares.
