Few inventions of the 1860s drew as much public excitement as the transatlantic telegraph, and this color lithograph from 1866 presents the Atlantic cable as a wonder to rank beside the great constructions of the ancient world. Published in New York by Kimmel & Forster, it belongs to a popular genre of allegorical prints that used symbolic imagery to show new technology as a triumph of human ingenuity. The first cable laid between Ireland and Newfoundland in 1858 failed after only weeks of service, so the successful line of 1866 was a major achievement that won wide attention in newspapers and print shops.
