A pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper, dated December 13, 1862, shows a signal telegraph train at work during the Battle of Fredericksburg. The battle was fought along the Rappahannock River in Virginia, and on that day Union troops under Ambrose Burnside launched repeated assaults against Confederate positions on the heights behind the town, all of which failed with heavy losses. Field telegraph wagons like this one allowed commanders to relay orders and reports quickly between headquarters and the front, a capability that was still new in warfare. The drawing is a useful record of how the Signal Corps moved its equipment across rough ground during the campaign.
