A small pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper, this sheet shows a signal telegraph machine and its operator at Fredericksburg, Virginia, and dates to about December 1862. That was the month of the battle there, when the Union army faced Confederate lines across the Rappahannock River. The Army Signal Corps, formed in 1860 under Albert J. Myer, used flags and telegraph wire to pass orders across the field, and the drawing offers a close look at the equipment and the person running it.
