Young Thomas Edison, shown here pulling a small child from the path of a moving train, is set at the depot in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Popular accounts of Edison's life place the rescue around 1859, when he was a teenager working as a telegraph operator, and say the child's grateful father later taught him telegraphy. The picture is a wood engraving printed as an illustration in a book about Edison, so it reflects how nineteenth-century readers imagined the scene rather than a camera's record of it. Railroad danger and the hero-inventor legend both appear in its composition.
