Thomas Edison sits for this half-length portrait, shown facing the camera, and the sitter's direct gaze is what sets it apart from the many full-figure or working-environment images of him from the same era. The print is credited to J.M. White & Co. and dated around 1893, a period when Edison was among the most photographed men in America, with his phonograph, incandescent lamp and motion picture work drawing constant press attention. The "U.S. Copyright Office" notation on the record indicates the image was registered for copyright, which was a common step for portraits of famous figures that were sold or reproduced widely. Worth noticing is how such studio images helped shape the public face of the inventor during the years when his reputation was being built.
