Six Confederate paper notes appear side by side on a single sheet, photographed as nos. 7 through 12 of a larger plate series and copyrighted by William Lee. The Confederate government printed paper money during the Civil War to pay for its operations, and as the Confederacy collapsed in 1865, those notes lost nearly all their value. By the 1870s they had become curiosities and collectors' items, and these photographs preserve the printed designs of wartime currency that had otherwise largely disappeared from circulation.
