*The Cash System* is a New York lithograph from 1877, issued under the Currier & Ives imprint and listed in the firm's catalog raisonné. Like much of the firm's output, it was made for a broad popular market that bought affordable prints for homes, shops, and offices. The year came just after the Panic of 1873 and during the long economic slump that followed, when tight credit made cash payment a pressing question for merchants and households alike. The record does not describe the scene, so the print is best read as a snapshot of that anxious period in American commerce.
