Few buildings in Lower Manhattan look as sculptural from above as the Chase Manhattan Bank headquarters, and this aerial view, made around 1968, shows its tinted glass tower rising from the open plaza around its base. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the building, and SOM partner Nathaniel Owings is the author of the book in which this photograph appeared. The tower was completed in 1961 as a statement of corporate confidence in the city's financial district. Photographer William Garnett used the high vantage point to turn the building and its surrounding streets into a near-abstract pattern.
