Titled simply *The cash system*, this Currier & Ives lithograph takes an everyday store routine, the handling of payments across a sales counter, as its subject. Published in New York in 1877, it belongs to the firm's long run of popular prints that turned ordinary American commercial life into easily read scenes. In that period, large dry goods stores often used cash carriers, wire or pneumatic tube systems that sent a sale slip and payment from the counter to a central cashier, who returned the change the same way. The print is listed in the firm's catalog raisonné, which helps researchers place it among the company's other work.
