Two windmills share a single mount here, one built of timber and one of brick, so the picture works as a quiet comparison of construction methods. Wooden post mills turned their whole body on a central post to face the wind, while brick tower mills stayed fixed and rotated only the cap. Mills like these pumped water for farms and drained low ground, and they were a common sight in rural areas before steam and electric pumps replaced them. Seeing them side by side shows how the choice of material shaped a mill's size, lifespan and appearance.
