A postcard addressed to Miss Nellie Bonjour of Chapin, Iowa, shows two small scenes framed within a ring of roses: a woman seated by a telephone in one, and a man reading a letter beside a telephone in the other. The pairing reflects how the telephone was becoming part of everyday life in the early 1900s, when many rural and small-town households had only recently gained access to it. Color halftone cards like this one, printed in a series, were a popular way to send sentimental messages, and the card's courtship theme of separated lovers connected by wire would have been easy for its recipient to read.
