Workmen stand outside a building labeled as a trimming shop, a workplace that would have stitched and fitted leather and canvas goods. Shops like this supported Union forces in Washington, where the army's needs for harness, saddles, and wagon covers grew throughout the war. The picture was made in 1865 by Mathew Brady's studio, using the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose a glass plate before it dried. Its subject is ordinary labor behind the military effort, rather than battle or troops in the field.
