Few spans in the Balkans are as recognizable as the bridge at Mostar, which carries a steep stone arch over the Neretva River. This photochrom print, a color process of the period, dates from roughly 1890 to 1900 and appears in the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog J of 1905. Herzegovina was under Austro-Hungarian administration during those years, after the 1878 Congress of Berlin. The bridge itself was built in the 16th century under Ottoman rule and became a symbol of the town until it was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt in 2004.
