Bedloe's Island, the small site in New York Harbor, is the setting here, with the Statue of Liberty standing on its pedestal around 1922, about 36 years after France's gift was dedicated in 1886. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper figure, and Gustave Eiffel's firm built its internal iron framework, a structural detail that is easy to miss from the water. The island kept the Bedloe's name until 1956, when it was renamed Liberty Island, so the older spelling in the title helps date the picture.
