Few WPA posters name their subjects as plainly as this one. Its records link the 1936 watercolor exhibition at the Ottumwa Art Center in Iowa to Rufino Tamayo, Julian Levi and Elizabeth Terrell, a mix of Mexican and American modernists. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored posters like this to announce exhibitions in towns far from the major coastal museums, and the silkscreen process allowed affordable local runs. A "Jun 17 1940" date stamp on the back shows the sheet was still in use or storage several years after it was printed.
