Ottumwa, Iowa, opened a new art center at 122 East 3rd Street on Saturday, June 17, 1939, and this color silkscreen poster announced the event. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored it. During the late 1930s the project employed artists to design silkscreen posters that promoted exhibitions, concerts, and classes across the country, and many small towns used them to draw residents to new cultural spaces. The poster's bold flat shapes and hand-cut lettering reflect the screen-printing methods the project relied on.
