Announcing the opening of the Mason City Art Center on Sunday, January 12, this silkscreen poster was produced in 1941 under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. The project's poster division made many such designs in the late 1930s and early 1940s to publicize exhibitions, concerts, libraries and community events, often using flat, bold color that could be printed in large runs. A stamp on the back, dated January 8, 1941, shows the poster was in circulation only days before the opening it advertised. Its catalog subjects also include hands, a motif worth noticing in a poster meant to draw people to a new civic building.
