The title places this scene at Magueyes, along the old royal road between Veguitas and Bayamo, where a skirmish was fought on December 17, 1896. That was deep into the Cuban War of Independence, which began in 1895 when insurgents rose against Spanish colonial rule and fought largely in the countryside, or *manigua*, of the eastern provinces. The card's folder title, *Recuerdos de la Manigua* ("Memories of the Backcountry"), reflects how such rural campaigns became part of Cuban memory. Printed around 1910, the postcard shows how the war was being retold after Cuba's independence was established in 1902.
