Viñales Valley, in Cuba's Pinar del Río Province, is the particular place this print records, a rolling landscape of steep limestone formations called mogotes rising from flat red-earth fields. The record dates the photograph to about 1964, a period when the valley was already known for its tobacco farms and the small wooden houses that dotted the countryside. Tobacco cultivation has long shaped the region, and the valley's distinctive landscape made it a favorite subject for photographers seeking scenes of the island's rural life. The print is part of the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, which holds many images of Cuba from the 1960s.
