Playa Ancón sits on the southern coast of Cuba, a few miles east of the port city of Trinidad in the province of Sancti Spíritus. Its wide, pale sand and shallow Caribbean water made it one of the island's best-known beaches, and the Library of Congress dates this print to around 1964, a period when Cuba's revolutionary government was reshaping much of daily life, including tourism and public recreation. Because the record names only the place and the decade, the picture is best read as a glimpse of an ordinary seaside scene from the early 1960s, when the coast was becoming a focus of national development plans.
